Frequently Asked Questions about Choosing, Installing and Using Sun Shade Sails:
How to shade an irregular or large area using shade sails?
Combining several shade sails presents an effective solution for shading expansive or irregular areas. There are two approaches to achieve this: installing the shade sails beside each other or slightly overlapping them.
Opting for the overlapping method offers the advantage of eliminating any gaps in shade coverage that might occur with a side-by-side setup. To ensure the sails remain undamaged, it is advisable to keep a minimum distance of 12 inches between them, thus preventing any chafing between the fabrics.
How to prevent sagging and water pooling in the middle of shade sails?
Size selection:When choosing a shade sail, opt for a size smaller than the coverage area (check our Measure & Installation guide below for detailed instructions). This allowance will leave enough room for tensioning and adjustments, minimizing the risk of sagging in the middle.
Proper Installation: Ensure that the shade sail is correctly tensioned and installed at a suitable angle. This helps water to naturally run off the surface instead of pooling.
Correct Slope and Angle:Design the shade sail with a sufficient slope or angle to facilitate water runoff. This prevents water from accumulating on the surface and causing pooling.
Regular Maintenance:We strongly recommend not leaving the shade sail exposed to rain for extended periods. During rainfall, at least one corner should be detached to prevent water from accumulating in the middle of the shade sail.
How to shade an irregular or large area using shade sails?
Our sun shade sail can be secured to existing structures like walls and roofs, provided they can withstand the sail's pulling force. Alternatively, you can use dedicated support poles and hardwares designed to be strategically positioned and highly durable.
For proper drainage, it is advisable to have at least one corner set at a lower height than the others, tilting the surface by approximately 40°. This ensures effective rainwater runoff.
It is also crucial to consider the changing path of sunlight, not only throughout the day but also across different seasons. This will help determine the optimal positioning of your shade.
For instance, if your shade sail provides sufficient coverage during midday, it may not be as effective in the afternoon. To address this fluctuation in sun shadow, it is recommended to increase the overall area of the shade, particularly on the east and northeast sides.
Do large size sun shade sails have seams on them?
Due to fabric width limitations, and depending on the size ordered, your shade sail may have seams.
To ensure both an aesthetically pleasing appearance and uninterrupted waterproof performance, we make sure to place the seams along the central axis or midline, ensuring symmetry on both sides.
How to Measure for Sun Shade Sails
Please order based on the finished sail size(±2" tolerance),NOT the distance between anchor points.
Step 1: Take the Measurements
Use a tape measure to determine the straight-line distance between each mounting point — not the area on the ground.
If you’re attaching the sail to structures at different heights (like walls or poles), make sure to note the height of each anchor to plan for proper slope and drainage.
Step 2: Size Reduction for Proper Tension
Shade sails should to be smaller than the distance between anchor points to allow for hardware and tension. As a general rule, your sail should be around 10% smaller on each side than your anchor-to-anchor measurements.
Please Note:The size listed on our website refers to the actual finished size of the sail when laid flat (±2” tolerance). Each side is measured from D-ring to D-ring along the same edge, not diagonally or corner to corner. This is not the tensioned or installed size — but the flat, unstretched dimensions of the product.
3. Finished Product Size
The size listed on your order refers to the actual finished sail size (with a tolerance of ±2”).
Each side is measured along the edge, from the bottom of one D-ring to the bottom of the D-ring on the same side of the sail, when laid flat and not under tension.
This is not the distance between anchor points, but rather the unstretched dimensions of the finished product.
How to Install Sun Shade Sails
1. Begin by finding an anchor point for the sail. If you are using posts or walls, make sure they are securely grounded and will be able to handle the tension of the sun shade sail. If you are using trees or other natural anchors, ensure they are strong enough to carry the weight of the sail.
2. Once you’ve identified the anchor points, begin attaching the sails to the anchors. You might need the hardware kit below to attach them. Depending on the type of sail you have, you will either need to use screws to attach the sail to the anchor point or use ratchet straps for a more secure fit. Make sure to double-check the tension of the sail to ensure it is secured properly.
3. Finally, you need to tidy up and make sure all the hardware connections are made properly. Once everything is held in place, you can enjoy your outdoor space in the shade during hot summer days.
